Thessaloniki is the capital of the prefecture Macedonia and has 1 million inhabitants in its metropolitan region. Thessaloniki means 'the victory at Thessaly'. In other languages the city is known as Thessalonique in French, Solun in Slavic, Selanik in Turkish and Salonicco in Italian. The city of Thessaloniki was already big in Ancient Greek and Roman times and continued to be a huge city during the reign of the Byzantines and the Ottomans in the Middle Ages. Although there was a big fire in the First World War which destroyed a big part of the lower medieval city centre, the upper town from the Middle Ages with the castle still exists.
