Top Iran official: UN laughter at Trump signifies deep rift

(26 Sep 2018) A top Iranian official suggested on Wednesday that the laughter from UN members at US President Donald Trump during his General Assembly speech a day earlier signified a deep rift between the US and its Western allies. Ali Shamkhani, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council described the laughter as "very anti-American". Trump's address to the General Assembly on Tuesday criticised what he called the "ideology of globalism" while heaping praise on his own administration's achievements. The self-congratulations drew headshakes and even mocking laughter. Trump appeared briefly flustered, then smiled and said it was not the reaction he expected "but that's all right." In Wednesday's news conference, Shamkhani said that the US stance towards Iran was "nothing new". "We can certainly disappoint America at internal, regional and international levels and we will come out victorious," he added.
