This unit, part of a Rs 26,000 crore contract awarded to Siemens in December 2022, is set to produce 1,200 high-powered 9000 HP electric locomotives (EF-9K) over 11 years, revolutionizing freight transport across Indian Railways, particularly for the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC). High-Quality 9000 HP EF-9K Locomotives The Dahod facility, upgraded from its 1926 origins as a steam locomotive maintenance workshop, has rolled out its first prototype, the EF-9K, showcased in March 2025. These locomotives, among the world’s most powerful single-unit freight engines, boast a 9000 HP rating and can haul 4,500 tonnes at a maximum speed of 120 kmph, with an average speed of 75 kmph on gradients as steep as 1 in 200. Designed for heavy-duty freight operations, they are tailored for the Western and Eastern DFCs, enabling double-stack container trains to achieve speeds of 50-60 kmph, up from 20-25 kmph on conventional tracks. Advanced Features and Quality The EF-9K locomotives are equipped with cutting-edge technology, including: Advanced Propulsion Systems: Locally produced in Siemens’ Indian factories, these systems incorporate IGBT technology for enhanced energy efficiency and performance, aligning with Indian Railways’ electrification goals. Railigent Platform: Siemens’ AI-based platform ensures predictive maintenance, targeting 95% availability and 150,000 km of trouble-free operation, minimizing downtime and boosting reliability. Green Manufacturing: Built using green energy, the locomotives carry a “green manufacturing” tag, supporting India’s net-zero CO2 emissions target by 2030. Indigenization: With 89% of components sourced locally, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has challenged the team to achieve 100% indigenization, reinforcing the ‘Make in India’ vision. Production and Economic Impact The Dahod unit, fully operational after its first phase was dedicated in March 2024, is set to produce five locomotives in 2023-24, scaling to 35 in 2024-25, 80 annually in years three and four, 100 in years five and six, and 160 annually thereafter until 2033-34. This ramp-up supports the National Rail Plan’s goal of increasing freight share to 45% by 2030. The project is expected to generate over 10,000 direct and indirect jobs, fostering regional development in Dahod. Maintenance and Longevity Siemens will maintain the locomotives for 35 years at four Indian Railways depots—Kharagpur, Visakhapatnam, Raipur, and Pune—each with a capacity of 300 locomotives. Training for railway staff ensures seamless integration and operation, enhancing long-term reliability #D9Locomotive #Dahod9000 #LocomotiveWorkShopGujarat #indianralway
