The second edition of the #ACEATruckTalks webinar series brought together top experts and policymakers to explore the pivotal role of the EU’s new Emissions Trading System (ETS2) in accelerating the decarbonisation of road transport. Set to launch in 2027, the ETS2 will expand the EU’s carbon pricing framework to cover emissions from fossil fuels used in buildings and road transport, a major step forward in aligning climate goals with industrial and economic competitiveness. By putting a price on carbon in sectors traditionally hard to decarbonise, the ETS2 aims to drive investment in clean technologies and promote sustainable mobility solutions. The session moderated by Thomas Fabian (Chief Commercial Vehicles Officer at ACEA) featured high-level speakers including Peter Liese, Member of the European Parliament (EPP), Michael Pahle, Head of Climate and Energy Policy Group at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and Laura Iozzelli, Research Fellow at STG Climate, School of Transnational Governance, European University Institute. The panel provided a comprehensive overview of the ETS2 framework, addressing both the opportunities and challenges of its implementation. Key topics included the impact on fuel prices, the pace of technology deployment, the risk of social backlash, and the importance of a clear and fair policy roadmap. As Europe prepares for a major shift in how it approaches road transport emissions, this edition of #ACEATruckTalks offered valuable insights into how ETS2 can serve as a catalyst for sustainable, competitive, and equitable mobility.
