He has won the Golden Globe Award and Screen Actors Guild award for Best Actor. Depp rose to prominence on the 1980s television series 21 Jump Street, becoming a teen idol. Turning to film, he played the title character of Edward Scissorhands and later found box office success in films such as Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Rango, and the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. His latest film, with fellow filmmaker Bruce Robinson, is called The Rum Diary is based on a novel by Hunter S. Thompson and chronicles the wild experiences of a journalist in Puerto Rico in the 1950's. Bruce Robinson stood at the helm of this project after being selected by both Depp and the late Mr. Thompson for the screen adaptation. Both Depp and Robinson addressed members of the Union to answer questions and provide insight not only to the profession of journalism but also to their experiences and purpose in making the film.
