Ring-necked Ducks are short to medium-distance migrants, moving from northern North American breeding grounds to wintering areas in the southern U.S., Mexico, and Caribbean from late September to early December. Blue-winged Teals are known to breed primarily in the Northern Prairie Pothole Region, some do winter along the southern Atlantic coast, including South Carolina . Ring-necked ducks are larger, diving ducks (15-18 inches) with a peak head shape, dark wings, and a conspicuous white ring on their bill. Blue-winged teals are small, early-migrating dabbling ducks (14-16 inches) featuring a distinct sky-blue wing patch, a white facial crescent in males. Ring-necked ducks are larger, diving ducks (15-18 inches) with a peak head shape, dark wings, and a conspicuous white ring on their bill. Blue-winged teals are small, early migrating dabbling ducks (14-16 inches) featuring a distinct sky-blue wing patch. Both are common North American waterfowl, the Blue-winged Teal and Ring-necked Duck belong to two different groups: dabbling ducks and diving ducks. This fundamental difference shapes their appearance, behavior, and habitat. Ring-necked Ducks, like most divers, typically need a "running start" across the surface to get airborne. As a dabbler, the Blue-winged Teal can spring directly into the air from the water. While both are social waterfowl, Ring-necked Ducks typically form much larger, more concentrated flocks than Blue-winged Teal, especially during migration and winter. Ring-necked ducks are considered strong, fast-flying, and highly acrobatic birds. Blue-winged Teals are considered fast-flying agile birds.
