Past times and Life history of Srila Rupa Goswami: śrī-caitanya-mano-‘bhīṣṭaṁ sthāpitaṁ yena bhū-tale svayaṁ rūpaḥ kadā mahyaṁ dadāti sva-padāntikam When will Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī Prabhupāda, who has established within this material world the mission to fulfill the desire of Lord Caitanya, give me shelter under his lotus feet? Even though numerous eternal associates of Shri Chatitanya Mahaprabhu appeared in this world and inundated the entire universe with the flood of transcendental loving service to the divine lotus feet of Gandharvika Giridhari, yet Shrila Rupa Goswami is considered as the foremost associate of Sachinanadan Gaurahari, who appeared in this world to bestow upon all the conditioned living entities the most elevated, brilliant devotional service in paramour love, as he is the one who established the inner most heart’s desire of Shriman Mahaprabhu. All the previous Gaudiya Vaishnava Acharyas have accepted Shrila Rupa Goswami as their shiksa guru and thus we all, due to our unfathomable good fortune, have been blessed with the opportunity to be the recipients of his causeless mercy, being in his line of disciplic succession and being know as Rupanugas. Shrila Rupa Goswami, who on the order of Shri Chaitanya Chandra, left his high post in the muslim government to completely dedicate his entire life to the practice and propagation of pure devotional service to the lotus feet of Vanamali Shyamsundar and Vrajeshwari Shrimati Radhika, wrote innumerable Bhakti literatures for showing the path of one-pointed devotion to the lotus feet of Krishna, which are like two blue lotus flowers oozing nectar and which the bumblebee like devotees relish to their full satisfaction. After being instructed by Shri Gaurasundar in Prayag about the science of devotional service, Shrila Rupa Goswami went to Vrindavan where, along with the other Goswamis, he revealed many of the hidden pastime places of the Lord, thus blessing all the devotees of the Lord with the opportunity to go visit these places and meditate on the wonderfully sweet pastimes of Lord Tribhangalalit Shyam. During the Rathayatra festival when Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu recited one shloka, which appeared to be referring to mundane paramours, Rupa goswami, who was present there at that time, could actually understand the hidden meaning behind the recitation of the shloka and recited the following verse revealing the true meaning of Mahaprabhu’s mood: priyah so ‘yam krsnah saha-cari kuru-ksetra-militas tathaham sa radha tad idam ubhayoh sangama-sukham tathapy antah-khelan-madhura-murali-pancama-juse mano me kalindi-pulina-vipinaya sprhayati [This is a verse spoken by Srimati Radharani. “My dear friend, now I have met My very old and dear friend Krsna on this field of Kuruksetra. I am the same Radharani, and now We are meeting together. It is very pleasant, but still I would like to go to the bank of the Yamuna beneath the trees of the forest there. I wish to hear the vibration of His sweet flute playing the fifth note within that forest of Vrndavana.” (Sri Caitanya-caritamrta Madhya-lila 1.76)] In this way, following the instructions of Gaurahari, Rupa goswami, who is none other than Radhika’s dear most Rupa manjari in Krishna lila, propagated the path of pure devotional service, through the various nectarean books that he wrote with great expertise, which are filled with the highest transcendental mellows. He wrote the famous book Shri Bhakti Rasamrita Sindhu, which describes the nectarean ocean of devotion, and the various topics related to Bhakti. Understanding the true heart’s desire of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, he composed various shlokas describing Bhakti and the process to achieve it. In Bhakti Rasamrita Sindhu, Shrila Rupa goswami describes Bhakti as follows: anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyaṁ jñāna-karmādy-anāvṛtam ānukūlyena kṛṣṇānu- śīlanaṁ bhaktir uttamā “One should render transcendental loving service to the Supreme Lord Kṛṣṇa favorably and without desire for material profit or gain through fruitive activities or philosophical speculation.
