The family is the primary venue for enlightenment education. Parents are the primary actors in family education. While they are still alive, children learn through their actions and words, morality is the core theme of family education. The following are two examples of successful education: Mencius's mother and Dou Yanshan. These two examples fully illustrate the role of the family in education during the children's grow up. Parents' moral character serves as a role model for their children. And morality plays a far greater role in life than knowledge. “孟(mèng)母(mǔ)” was the mother of Meng Ke, Mencius Known as the Second Sage in China, he is one of the representative figures of Confucianism. What he achieved was largely due to his mother's dedication to education. Mencius' father died early, and his mother raised him single-handedly by weaving for others. Initially, their home was next to a cemetery, where seeing frequent visitors, and heard crying bitterly. His mother felt this was detrimental to his grow up, so she moved to a busy area near a market. Later, she discovered the bustling, noisy market with people constant comings and goings, and the haggling, which still didn't have positive effect to his son, so she moved again and this time closer to a school where always seeing the refined manners of the people around daily, she felt that was the ideal place for her son, so she decided to settle there. This is the famous story of Mencius's mother moving three times. Later, she discovered that her son often lied and skipped from school, she was disappointed, without a word, she broke her loom shuttle deliberately, ruining the nearly completed piece of cloth and undoing countless nights of hard work. Mencius saw this and asked his mother why she did this. His mother explained, "Studying and learning are not something you can do in a day or two. It's like I am weaving cloth. I must start with one thread, one thread at a time, and finally weave it into a full piece of cloth. And only a full piece cloth could be useful. The same principle applies to studying. If you can't focus and persevere, and give up halfway, how can you become a successful person?" Heeding his mother's advice, Mencius devoted himself to his studies and later became a great thinker. Dou Yanshan, whose real name was Dou Yujun, lived during the Five Dynasties period (907-960). Because his family lived in the Yanshan area, he was known as "Dou Yanshan." (Dou Yanshan was a man of great benevolence and righteousness. He taught his five sons, all of whom became famous.) He often provided financial support to relatives, friends, and the particularly needy. He, himself was extremely frugal, never wasting a penny. However, he used his savings to build forty libraries filled with thousands of volumes, where impoverished children could study for free. His own character was truly commendable, and he undoubtedly served as a valuable role model for his sons. Coupled with his strict family upbringing, all five of his sons ultimately achieved great success and were both honest and devoted to the people. His eldest son, Dou Yi, rose to the position of Shangshu (Minister of State Affairs); his second son, Dou Yan, became a Hanlin scholar; his third son, Dou Zhen, became Vice-Minister of State Affairs; his fourth son, Dou Kan, became a Recorder; and his fifth son, Dou Xi, became Zuo Buque. All of them enjoyed high reputations and were well-liked by the people. -------------------------------------------- Chinese classic#三字经#中文 #BasicChinese #LearnChineseforBeginners #LearnMandarin #FreeChineseLessons #FreeMandarinChinese #LearnChineseOnline #BeginnerChineseLesson #FreeOnlineChineseLessons #BasicChineseCourses #easychinese #Chinese #LearnChinese #China #ChineseLanguage
