The Battle of Vinegar Hill was an engagement during the Irish Rebellion of 1798 on 21 June 1798 when over 15,000 British soldiers launched an attack on Vinegar Hill outside Enniscorthy, County Wexford, the largest camp and headquarters of the Wexford United Irish rebels. It marked a turning point in the Irish Rebellion of 1798, as it was the last attempt by the rebels to hold and defend ground against the British military. The battle was re-enacted on the weekend of the 4th and 5th of August with visitors and volunteers being given the opportunity to experience life as an 18th-century redcoat at Enniscorthy Castle or to learn about the pikemen of Wexford at the National 1798 Rebellion Centre in Enniscorthy. A fantastic weekend was had by everybody, including over 100 pikemen, 60 redcoats and 2,000 visitors for our inaugural battle re-enactment.
