The Sak Yant tattoo festival happens once a year at a Wat in northern Bangkok. These tattoos are believed to offer mystical powers, protection, or good luck to those who receive them. The festival starts on Friday night with Ajaans giving hundreds of tattoos throughout the night and into the morning. These tattoos are set designs that the Ajaan decides when he tattoos. The Ajaan also decides where the tattoo will be placed on the body. Beginning Saturday morning, many of those who received tattoos and those who have previously gotten them (roughly 10,000 people) sit in front of a stage where the tattoos are activated. Each design has a different character associated with it. There is the warrior, the old man, a monkey, and others. When the tattoos are activates sometimes the wearer becomes possessed. This possession typically takes the form of rushing the stage. Security and first aid are on hand because it can get a bit out of control. To calm down those who rush the stage security rubs the persons ears and whispers to them.
