Tensions between the judiciary and the executive have been simmering for some time and today at an event to mark the country's Constitution Day some of those differences came out into the open. The Prime Minister said all three branches of the government, the legislature, executive and judiciary should not interfere with each other's functioning. While law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad criticised the judiciary saying public interest litigations cannot become a substitute for governance and that governance must remain with those elected to office. However, Chief Justice Dipak Misra appeared to respond saying fundamental rights are the bedrock of the Constitution and that citizens' rights have to be on top.
