The Father of Lionel Trains was Joshua Lionel Cowen (originally Cohen), who was born in Manhattan on August 25, 1877. When Joshua was just 5 years old, Thomas Edison formed the Edison Electric Illuminating Company of New York, to bring his Incandescent Light Bulb to parts of Manhattan. The Electrical Age had begun. In 1900, as the electric frontier dawned, 23 year old Joshua Lionel Cowen formed the Lionel Manufacturing Company at 24 Murray St in Manhattan in order to make “electric novelties.” 00:00 Tradition 00:22 Trains under Christmas Trees 00:37 Carlisle & Finch become the first American company to make an electric toy train 00:49 Christmas and Lionel are synonymous 01:00 Joshua Lionel Cowen in born 01:11 Thomas Edison electrifies Manhattan 01:21 The Pearl Street Station Power Plant goes online in 1882 01:42 18 year old Joshua gets a ticket for restless bicycle riding 01:52 How toys were advertised before radio and television 02:08 Store owners electrify their display windows 02:28 The Lionel Manufacturing Company is founded 02:45 Joshua Cowen's patents 02:55 Joshua Cowen meets store owner Robert Ingersoll 03:23 Cowen builds an "Electric Express" carriage for Ingersoll's window 03:47 Cowen makes his first electric model railroad 04:15 The first transcontinental railroad is completed in 1869 04:24 Edison Films releases The Great Train Robbery in 1903 04:57 Early Lionel trains run on batteries 05:05 The Three-Rail System is introduced in 1906 05:17 The first Lionel Transformer is introduced the same year 05:51 The roaring '20s and the Lionel catalog 06:14 The economic crash of 1929 06:20 Lionel endures loses and hires train engineers and conductors to endorse its trains 06:39 The Mickey and Minnie Mouse windup hand car is released 07:03 The 700 E Hudson is released in 1937 07:24 Lionel during World War II 07:48 The first trains the smoke, and smoking trains throughout the years 08:30 Lionel Trains trigger all the senses 08:44 Lionel train cars, including the Lionel Milk Car from 1947 09:14 The Santa Fe Super Chief Passenger Train 09:35 Lionel's Super Chief is released in 1948 09:52 The Joe DiMaggio Show 10:22 The Baby Boom boosts Lionel 10:37 The rise of automobile and plane travel 10:47 Lionel Super "O" is introduced in 1957 10:55 Lionel's Pastel Pink "Train for Girls!" 11:24 The Death of Joshua Lionel Cowen in 1965 11:38 The Johnny Cash partnership 12:06 The 80s move to Mexico and back 12:27 Richard Kuhn rescues Lionel in 1986 13:06 1990's Remake of the 700 E Hudson 13:19 Technological advancements in whistles, wireless remotes and Neil Young 14:08 Release of Train Master Command Control System and Rail Sounds 14:45 Lionel files for bankrupcy protection in 1994 14:57 Neil Young and others buy Lionel 15:08 The Polar Express Movie is released in 2004 15:37 Lionel releases other train sets based on popular brands 16:03 It's that time of year to get out the trains Special thanks to the Sindoni Family for sharing their family tradition.
