Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine represents Europe's largest humanitarian emergency in decades. Beyond the immediate crisis, this conflict has fundamentally reshaped global security agendas and severely stress-tested the international legal order. While centered in Europe, its effects—from food and energy insecurity to shifts in defense postures, disinformation flows, and the very credibility of international norms—reverberate across ASEAN and East Asia. We are privileged to host Ms. Oleksandra Matviichuk, a leading Ukrainian human rights defender and head of the Center for Civil Liberties, which was awarded the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize. This forum is a unique opportunity to engage Ms. Matviichuk's frontline experience with Southeast Asian experts and policymakers. The discussion will assess the current dynamics of the war, the ongoing humanitarian crisis, and the profound challenges facing the international community. Crucially, this conversation will connect lessons directly to ASEAN and East Asia. The war’s implications directly intersect with regional geopolitical realities, including ASEAN’s fragmented response to Ukraine, the crisis in Myanmar, and the complex security dynamics across the Taiwan Straits, East China Sea, and South China Sea. This session moves beyond mere observation to ask: What does the defense of international norms in Ukraine mean for stability in our region?
