BUNYA MOUNTAINS - COOMBA FALLS - KILCOY - SOMERSET DAM This week we continue our drive through the South Burnett Region. The day starts with a drive to Bunya Mountains National Park - 3-hours drive north-west of Brisbane. For generations, people have been gathering at the Bunya Mountains which has the world’s largest stand of ancient bunya pines. We are awestruck with the size of the bunya pines and the natural scenic beauty of the national park. We discover rainforests, waterfalls, panoramic views and much cooler temperatures in the mountains. A 30-minute drive east takes us through the quaint town of Maidenwell on our way to Coomba Falls. This is an exceptionally beautiful place, featuring a deep natural swimming hole and striking granite cliffs. Coomba Falls was home to a massacre of 300 Aboriginal people in the 19th century. European settlers reportedly killed Indigenous people, including women and children. As a result of the massacre, local aboriginal people avoid the water hole, as Coomba Falls has become known as a place of deep sorrow. The town of Kilcoy is located 99 km north-west of Brisbane. Kilcoy is a quiet rural town that services the surrounding beef cattle farming district. It's one significant attraction is the Yowie statue. The Kilcoy Yowie legend dates back generations, including early Aboriginal accounts. Yowie Park pays homage to the Yowie legend with a statue of this mythical creature and there are many Yowie 'mentions' throughout the town. A 20-minute drive south of Kilcoy brings us to Somerset Dam. Somerset dam is 2 hours drive from Brisbane and is one of the region’s oldest and largest water storages. It's popular for fishing, boating and water sports and there are also hire boats and kayaks available. Swimming is permitted and the facilities at the dam include BBQ's, picnic tables and toilets. On our way home, we pop into the Perma-Poultry Market at Beerburrum to view the various breeds of chickens and ducks available for sale. As tempting as it was to buy some more chickens, we settled on some mealworms as a treat for our chooks instead....and they loved them!!! WHERE DID WE GO?
