What can Antarctica teach us about the ice beneath our boots on Keuka Lake? In this documentary episode of Let’s Catch Fish, Captain Ken walks the frozen surface of Keuka Lake alongside educator and PolarTREC expedition member Michele Cross - known locally as “The Ice Lady.” In 2009, Michele spent seven weeks in Antarctica supporting scientific research missions beneath the sea ice, working long field days in extreme conditions. Today, that experience informs how she studies and explains lake ice right here in upstate New York. As we drill test holes and examine the lake in real time, we explore: • Ice thickness and structural strength • Snow ice vs black ice • Methane bubbles beneath the surface • Ice crystal formations (“ice octopi”) • How snow load and temperature affect safety • What Antarctic research teaches us about reading winter ice Filmed entirely on Keuka Lake in the Finger Lakes region of New York, this episode connects global research with local outdoor life.
