After studying South Asian raga music for the past 32 years on sitar, I have fulfilled a long time desire to study upright bass which I initiated 4 years back. Here is my first bass raga video, improvising on the beautiful night raga known as Gawati. Upright bass has a beautiful capacity to execute the meends (microtonal slides and inflections) and I find very suitable for the meditative tradition of the ancient dhrupad style, especially in alaap the free tempo improvisation on the mood on the raga. I had the wonderful opportunity to study with dhrupad masters, the Gundecha Brothers this spring who blessed me and encouraged me to play this music on bass.
