In all, the War on Drugs, which started well before the Nixon administration, has been a colossal failure. It has not only done what it set out to do, but it has wreaked untold havoc on America’s black and brown and other underprivileged communities. The statistics resulting from this failed war are staggering. At its inception, the DEA employed 1,470 agents with a budget under $75 million. Today, the DEA has over 5,000 agents and a budget over $2 billion. In 1980, there were 50,000 inmates behind bars for nonviolent, drug-related crimes. This number increased to 400,000 by 1997. Today, an estimated 500,000 people remain behind bars on drug charges (40,000 of which are incarcerated for cannabis offenses). In all, in the 40 years after the War on Drugs was initiated, the U.S. government spent an eye-popping $2.5 trillion fighting this so-called war. The U.S. spends on average over $51 billion per year enforcing drug laws. Taxpayers have contributed more than $213.5 billion to this fight.
