One educational leader is on a mission to encourage students to expand its horizons and development while assuming leadership roles in the city that nurtured and supported their talents. St. Augustine High School was created in 1951 to provide opportunities for academic excellence to the African American community. Since its inception, though, the school has been so much more than just classwork. The foundation of a St. Augustine education is instilling leadership skills, building confidence, teaching moral values and fostering “a community of brotherhood unmatched across the nation.” Notable alumni include State Senators Royce Duplessis and Jimmy Harris; Dean Baquet, former executive editor, The New York Times; Jon Batiste, Grammy-winning musician; Griffin P. Rodgers, director, National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases; Ed Rigaud, co-owner of the Cincinnati Reds; and Keith Butler, financier; among many others. The PRC’s Preserving New Orleans’ Future speaker series showcases innovation and investment to bring insight into opportunities for New Orleans’ future. Aulston Taylor is the seventh president of St. Augustine High School. “My priorities as the school leader are to sustain tradition while implementing innovative ways to reach and engage our students; ignite resources and relationships to expand our school’s brand globally to share our extraordinary story and to build partnerships with organizations and people that have an affinity for the African American male and their growth,” he said. This presentation was filmed November 17, 2023.
