Development of the Saab 35 Draken started in 1948 as the Swedish air force future replacement for the then also in development Saab 29 Tunnan dayfighter and Saab 32B Lansen night fighter. It featured an innovative but unproven double delta wing, which led to the creation of a sub-scale test aircraft, the Saab 210, which was produced and flown to test this previously-unexplored aerodynamic feature. The full-scale production version entered service with frontline squadrons of the Swedish Air Force on 8 March 1960. It received the designation Flygplan 35 (Fpl 35; 'Aeroplane 35') and was produced in several variants and types, most commonly as a fighter type with the prefix J (J 35), standing for Jaktflygplan (Pursuit-aircraft), the Swedish term for fighter aircraft. The Draken functioned as an effective supersonic fighter aircraft of the Cold War period. Even though the type was designed and intended as an interceptor, it was considered to be a very capable dogfighter for the era. Saab 35J (Johan) Fighter version designated J 35J (Johan). In 1985 the Swedish government decided to modify 67 J 35F2s to the J 35J standard. The aircraft received a longer lifespan, modernized electronics, a modernized cannon, two additional AIM-9 Sidewinder pylons under the air intakes and increased external fuel capacity. The modification took place between 1987 and 1991. The final operational J 35J flew for the last time in 1999. Flygfesten is an eventful weekend with world class pilots and airplanes. It will include first world war pioneer to the lates of modern airplane engineering, and everything in between. Flygfesten is an airshow that is arranged every three to four years in Sweden by Västerdalarnas Aero club, an aeroclub located in Dala-Järna in Vansbro municipality, with about 7000 inhabitants. Flygfesten has since the re-launch in 1986 been arranged every three to four years. With an air show in top international class, our air show is considered one of the largest civil arranged air shows in Northern Europe. Although the air show is our major focal area, Flygfesten wants to be more than just a regular air show. "We want an event with a festival touch, where Saturday's and Sunday's air show is interspersed with evening entertainment during Friday and Saturday night in the form of dance, rock, disco and fun fair. All of it framed by a pleasant atmosphere." Flygfesten is a non-profit arrangement and is held to promote the activity of the club in particular and to aviation in general. It offers a good forum for aviation enthusiasts to meet other likeminded, while it is a fine opportunity for us to recruit new club members. #siivet #draken #flygfesten -- Siivet-Wings magazine: http://siivet.fi/ For more great aviation videos please see: / siivet1986
