Chop the weeds into smaller pieces to help them break down faster in the tea. Aim to fill about half of your 5-gallon bucket with these chopped weeds. Next, add water to the bucket. Rainwater is ideal because it doesn’t contain chlorine or other chemicals that can harm the beneficial microbes in the tea. If you don't have rainwater, you can use tap water, but it's important to dechlorinate it first. To do this, simply let the water sit in an open container for 24 hours. This allows the chlorine to evaporate, making the water safer for the microorganisms in your weed tea. After you've added the water, toss in a handful of compost or leaf mold. This will introduce beneficial microbes that help break down the plant material and release the nutrients into the water.
