(4 Apr 1999) Natural Sound Medical workers are struggling to treat the sick, exhausted and wounded among the estimated 80-thousand Kosovo refugees at a camp in Blace on the Macedonian border. Many have been forced to await treatment, lying on the ground in the cold and rainy weather. The wet, unhygienic conditions has compounded the misery and disease. Caught in no man's land. Tens of thousands of Kosovo Albanians are waiting in this makeshift camp on the Macedonian border. The absence of running water and toilets, and the cold, wet weather conditions are making a miserable situation even worse. The cramped conditions and freezing drizzle have already lead to the spread of disease. As well as dealing with the shock of having been forced from their homes, these refugees are now having to fight meningitis and diarrhoea. It is the young and the elderly who are worst hit. Relief workers are struggling -- carrying out the dangerously ill from the sea of refugees huddled together in this waterlogged field. Aid workers say they've managed to offer plastic sheeting to most here -- basic protection from the elements. Bread and biscuits are also being handed out. These are just a few of the more than 300-thousand refugees from Kosovo overwhelming the meager services of neighbouring territories. Touring the camp on Sunday was Julia Taft, U-S assistant secretary of state for refugees. Macedonia announced on Saturday that it won't accept any more refugees unless it knows they can go on to European countries and neighbouring states. But, with similar scenes in Albania and the Yugoslav republic of Montenegro, and President Milosevic's refusal to cave, despite NATO bombing, the crisis is escalating fast. It is now approaching the 'worst-case scenario' that Western officials hoped to avert by launching air strikes on Yugoslavia on March 24.
