This music was composed and recorded by incarcerated artists serving time in the Texas Department of Corrections and released in 1965. It is being shared by The Marshall Project as part of Redemption Songs, a limited-run newsletter that spotlights one song each week made in prison. Spanning almost a century, we’re telling the story of mass incarceration, one song at a time. Sign up for Redemption Songs here: https://www.themarshallproject.org/ne... Digitized on June 27, 2023, at Texas Prison Museum (Huntsville, Texas) by Maurice Chammah Jacket Copy: “Recorded on stage, the Old Prison Auditorium. This album comes from the Texas Department of Corrections, a prison system embracing 95,000 acres of land, 14 units of prisons, 13,000 inmates and 1,800 employees. Men come to the prison with a variety of skills, vocational and avocational. Attempts were made to utilize those skills in the varied agricultural, industrial, and construction programs of the Department. The Department’s treatment or rehabilitation program is largely responsible for this recording. Men with various skills were brought together for the production of a musical show, which was presented in a number of Texas cities. The success of that venture resulted in recording the songs for the general public. - George J. Beto, Ph.D., Director, Texas Department of Corrections.” Produced by Austin Custom Records, Austin, Texas, October 1965 Cute by Neal Hefti, recorded by The Big Band Warden, Turn Us Loose, by Norman Donaleski Trouble Follows Us, by Norman Donaleski Perfidy by Artie Shaw, recorded by The Latin Band Veto for Beto by Jerry Taylor, recorded by JT What Kind of Fool Am I by Anthony Newley, recorded by The Gamblers Li’l Darlin by Neal Hefti, recorded by The Big Band Country Music by Ferlin Husky, recorded by The Bum Steers Green, Green Grass of Home, by Porter Wagoner, Recorded by The Bum Steers Hello, Dolly by Louis Armstrong, recorded by The Dixieland Band Lonely Time, by Carmen Scolari, recorded by Carmen Scolari Eleven by Seven, by The Gamblers, recorded by The Gamblers Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag by James Brown, recorded by The Frames The Marshall Project's investigative journalism often sparks change by shining a light on injustice — with your support: https://www.themarshallproject.org/do...
