Han and Carr found that the saccule, an organ in the inner ear mainly linked to the sense of balance, plays a crucial role in detecting substrate-borne vibrations in the tokay gecko and potentially in other reptiles like lizards and snakes. The ancient auditory function of the saccule, previously only found in fish and amphibians, is likely preserved in amniotes via the lepidosaur lineage.
