These controls can be effectively combined to minimize and even eliminate the noise floor during a rag-chew, making it sound almost as if you are listening to a roundtable discussion over a 2-meter repeater. Note: Intercept Point Optimization provides some degree of attenuation by significantly lowering the amount of amplification in the first Intermediate Frequency stage if the receiver. It essentially amplifies only enough to overcome the insertion loss of the roofing filter. IPO strikes a balance between sensitivity and noise. IPO also improves the cross-modulation characteristic of the receiver. Think of that as a balance between sensitivity and selectivity. With all of this in mind, I recommend that you use IPO, IPO1, or IPO2 before enabling any attenuation. In a transceiver that doesn’t have an IPO option, disable any preamplifier.
