Formed in Sweden in 1978 by vocalist/guitarist Jonas Hansson, guitarist Morgan Alm, bassist Ingemar Stenquist, and drummer Marten Hedener, the band took its name from the famous Ritchie Blackmore song by Rainbow. After early lineup changes and a string of demos in the early 1980s, Silver Mountain solidified its classic formation with Hansson, bassist Per Stadin, keyboardist Jens Johansson, and drummer Anders Johansson, leading to their underground classic debut album, Shakin’ Brains (1983). Silver Mountain is renowned for reigniting the union of metal and classical music, inspired by Rainbow, and quickly earned acclaim across heavy metal magazines. Despite key members leaving to join Yngwie Malmsteen’s band, the group persisted, releasing albums such as Universe (1984) and Hibiya – Live in Japan (1985), achieving notable success in Japan. Later line-up changes brought a more AOR-oriented sound with Johan Dahlstrom (vocals) and Kjell Gustavsson (drums) before the band temporarily folded. In 2001, the classic Shakin’ Brains lineup reunited to record Breakin’ Chains, and a 2010 live reunion in Malmö led to Silver Mountain: A Reunion Live 2010. Today, Silver Mountain continues to create and is currently working on a new studio album, cementing their legacy as one of Sweden’s pioneering metal acts.
