What started out as breakroom talk evolved into our first section of the Appalachian Trail adventure. I read the books (including Grandma Gatewood), she planned the itinerary (including arranging food & Wild Turkey delivery midway), we gathered our supplies, & we set off. It was difficult but not impossible & that’s what we wanted. I had imagined a hike with a monkey brain of thoughts, introspection, & maybe new ideas. But instead it quickly settled into a rhythm of tending to only the most basic needs: Breathe, drink, eat something, watch your feet, break, go. We were strange guests in this wonderland that operates perfectly fine without us. It was us not against nature, but working with it, appreciating it, & respecting it. We kept the end of the itenerary open to options & ended up bailing on Day Six at Unicoi Gap. That day, the sides of the mountains were wet & weeping. A misty rain that made us say over & over how good it felt. It was sweet, slippery, & a little melancholy. My tent mate jokingly hollered that a shower, beer, & a nice bed at the holiday inn sounded good. I agreed and added fried chicken to that. We made a few lists to pass the time including naming all famous bears & birds. So it wasn’t the first time we listed our favorite foods, but it was the one that tempted us away from the mountain. It was just a see ya later, we came back, & we’ve completed over 100miles so far.
