Currently about four billion people in the world are poor (household income/day of less than US$1.90) or vulnerable to falling into poverty (household income/day of US$1.90-US$11). In this talk, I argue that the bottom four billion population which mainly lives in low- and middle-income countries may benefit more significantly from emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence compared to those living in high income countries. I will present several inspiring examples related to artificial intelligence deployments in agriculture, finance, mining, human resources and other areas that have benefitted the bottom four billion. I will also discuss how national policy makers and international organizations, technology companies and other actors can work together to maximize the benefits that developments in artificial intelligence can offer to the bottom four billion population. Nir Kshetri is Professor at University of North Carolina-Greensboro, USA. He has authored twelve books and about 200 academic articles, which have been translated into Arabic, Chinese, German, Spanish, French, Japanese, Portuguese and other languages. He has been ranked among the world’s top 0.03% researchers in the 2021 list of the World's Top Researchers by Stanford University. Nir’s work has been featured by hundreds of media worldwide. He has provided consulting services to Asian Development Bank, the Commonwealth Secretariat, various UN agencies and a number of private companies.
