The GE MRI T2 FLAIR protocol is a fast inversion recovery scan technique used to reduce CSF artifact that may occur during brain MRI scans. Cerebrospinal fluid can cause artifact in brain MRI scans when non-inverted CSF enters into the scan field of view. This can lead to error in diagnosis in the surrounding anatomical structures. To mitigate CSF artifact, the T2 FLAIR sequence provides an inversion slice that is wider than the imaging slice. To maintain CSF signal suppression, the repetition time (TR) must be at least 3 to 4 times the value of the Inversion time (TI). T2 FLAIR images have more signal to noise ratio and improved image contrast when compared to fast spin echo images. This MRI scan protocol is most often used during brain MRI scans where suppression of the CSF signal is desired.
