"Ill Wind" and "The Big Stampede" are key tracks from Zoot Sims' 1956 album, originally titled Goes to Jazzville (Dawn DLP-1115), which was later reissued as The Big Stampede in 1980. These recordings are significant as they capture Sims during a transitional period where he was establishing his own quintet after years in major big bands like those of Benny Goodman and Woody Herman. The Big Stampede sessions are notable for Sims playing both alto and tenor saxophone. While he was a tenor specialist, critics from Down Beat and the Windsor Star specifically praised his "fluent and impressive" alto work on tracks like "The Big Stampede". The Quintet Lineup: The tracks feature a tightly-knit group including Jerry Lloyd (trumpet), John Williams (piano), Knobby Totah or Bill Anthony (bass), and Gus Johnson (drums). Lloyd also composed "The Big Stampede". I do not own the copyright to the music, the recording and the photos. This video is posted for educational use under Section 17 U.S. Code § 107. As much as possible, I attempted to remove most of the pops and crackles from the original vinyl album. Some remastering was applied to make the performance cut through within the confines of the loudness wars. Hope you enjoy. #jazzsax #bop #vinylrecord #vinyloftheday #cooljazz
