A playthrough of Working Designs' 1993 RPG for the Sega CD, Lunar: The Silver Star. This video shows the entire game - there was one edit made for a bit of grinding (about an hour's worth of time) just after meeting Tempest for the first time. Nothing else has been cut. I remember drooling so much over screenshots of Lunar in magazines back around 1992-93. I was already thoroughly enamored with RPGs thanks to Final Fantasy II, but the pictures of the cinematic scenes on CD games made it look so much more awesome in my mind than anything I'd get on a cartridge. And while it might've not been the ultimate answer ever for JRPGs, it was nonetheless an extremely well put-together game. Playing it again, I found it to be an unexpectedly nostalgic throwback. The story isn't ever particularly huge nor epic, but rather, it's a more personal tale of a close-knit group (that just happen to be saving the world) with their ALL-CAPS RAGE. So you'd think, at least, with the apparent lack of a lower-case font kicking around on the computers at Working Designs circa 1992. It doesn't make it any-the-less endearing, though. The story is fairly short, and the gameplay is uncomplicated, but the lack of unnecessary distractions make it easy to digest. The graphics are as you'd expect from the Genesis (though the cinematics are much less impressive when you see how little animation they feature), but they are artfully done, and there are some really nice looking backdrops. The music is excellent, as well, though the tracks do tend to repeat a bit too often (as is the case with many early CD RPGs). Lunar: The Silver Star is one of those games that's difficult to qualify because its design is so dated. However, it's importance to the Sega CD's library can't be understated (as you can clearly see from how many times it has been remade over the years), nor can its charm. It's a classic, and no matter how old-fashioned it is, and no matter how much I enjoyed the PS1 remake (or hated the DS one), there's nothing that can quite match the experience of playing the original. _ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
