We planned to travel from Guatemala City to Xela in Western Guatemala via chicken bus until disaster struck... The only road through the middle of the country was closed for 2 days due to protests, sods law. This meant we had to embark on an unknown detour through the dangerous mountain roads of Guatemala, dodging robbery and potential high speed crashes on the way. The local buses in Guatemala have a reputation for trouble and for that reason many people avoid them completely. On our journey across the whole of Guatemala we stopped in an indigenous maya town way up in the mountains. Here we browsed the old school market streets and hit up a sketchy little bar for some Guatemalan booze. We arrived in Xela a dusty 10 hours later and hit the local market for a fresh Guatemalan meal. Finally we went and checked into our lovely £7 a night accommodation and crashed out.
