Understanding Nitrogen Narcosis (The Rapture Of The Deep) Nitrogen Narcosis, otherwise known as the Martini Effect, The Rapture of the Deep, Inert Gas Narcosis, or simply Gas Narcosis, occurs when the partial pressure of Nitrogen becomes to high. As we descend to depth, atmospheric pressure increases and so does the partial pressure of the gasses we breathe. Once they hit a certain threshold (which will be different for each diver), then certain gasses can become narcotic to us, and can cause many problems to us while underwater.
