The TVNZ God Defend New Zealand National Anthem we all grew up hearing at the start of each morning on Television New Zealand actually originated as the 'Expo '88' song for New Zealand held in Brisbane. The late Alan Slater was commissioned by the Department of Internal Affairs to arrange a new version of the anthem, featuring the tag team vocals of Annie Crummer, Peter Morgan with orchestration from the NZ Youth Jazz Orchestra. Deputy Prime Minster at the time, Geoffrey Palmer requested a further performance of this arrangement for the Parliamentary Reception to welcome home the 1987 Americas Cup Team. The version we all know and love features the arrangement expertly & epically done by Alan Slater along with the lead vocals in English from Crummer, Morgan (interesting to me as I always thought it was Bunny Walters) and the Te Reo verses by Dalvanius Prime and the Patea Maori Club. This arrangement to me is THE BEST version of this anthem you could ever wish for.
