Welcome to Urban Expeditions with Glasgow's Old Ruins - Exploring History... Today we venture back to Possil at Hamiltonhill to view another North Glasgow Ruin - This time its back to the Victorian School Days... Rockvilla School was built on a rocky hill in the farmlands of Hamiltonhill at Possil in 1877. The building was designed by John Honeyman who was a Scottish architect who is mostly known for his Church buildings such as the Tron Church at Sandyford, and also for being a partner to Charles Rennie Mackintosh for several years in designing. The Rockvilla School was built upon a retaining boundary wall of the Forth and Clyde Canal and towered over the street level of Possil Road and Dawson Road below in a castle like, grand and imposing fashion. The school functioned between 1877 and 1960, and even taught children from the Victorian Slum Clearances of the late 1800s. The building unfortunately caught fire in 1995 and was demolished in 1996. although there are many remains and ruins such as the incredible staircases. together with the retaining walls and inscriptions this structure is actually B listed and cannot be demolished or built over.
