Little did Colette Miller know, when she installed a “tag” on a tiny Downtown L.A. street in 2012, that it would spark an international social media sensation. “Everyone, on their own accord, just started interacting with it,” she says of the painted pair of angel wings wheat-pasted to a corrugated metal gate across from the American Hotel. Passersby “just started Instagramming it and Facebooking it and Tweeting it,” Miller says, inspiring her to paint more wings all over the world through her “Global Angel Wings Project.” During college in Richmond, VA, Miller was one of the original GWAR girls, performing with the band before it found fame as a shock rock powerhouse. She moved to Los Angeles in 1999, and quickly found her way to the Downtown art scene, where “everyone had a connection to Al’s Bar and the American Hotel,” she says. Miller was interviewed in January 2014 for “Tales of the American,” a documentary feature about the Arts District, Al’s Bar and the American Hotel. Filmmakers Pamela Wilson and Stephen Seemayer interviewed more than a hundred artists, musicians, writers and others who lived, worked and partied in and around the American Hotel. They are periodically releasing (in alphabetical order) edited versions of these interviews on this channel. To watch "Tales of the American" on Amazon Prime, go to https://amzn.to/2MyARcA.
