(18 Oct 1999) English/Nat Former South African President Nelson Mandela arrived in Israel on Monday for a two-day visit. It's a gesture of final reconciliation with a nation that backed South Africa's apartheid regime, and a signal of support for its moderate new government. He's due to meet with the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and give his backing to recent progress towards peace in the Middle East. Former South African President Nelson Mandela made an emotional visit to the Yad Vashem Holocaust museum on Monday. He was guided around the museum which chronicles the suffering of Jews during the Second World War. Mandela was clearly moved by the visit and laid a wreath of flowers as a mark of respect. It's the first time Mandela has visited the area, a sign of improving relations between Israel and South Africa. Mandela's trip comes as a reward for what he sees as the new Israeli Prime Minister's steps towards peace in the Middle East. Mandela and other anti-apartheid leaders have previously expressed a shared longing for Palestinian self-determination. A unity with the Palestinians springs from Israel's supplying of military training and armaments to South Africa's apartheid regime. Prior to the Holocaust museum visit, Mandela met the Israeli President Ezer Weizman. Mandela made it clear that if he could make peace with his old apartheid foes, he could do the same with the government of Israel. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I have come here in order to pay my respects to the government and the people of Israel. Many people have questioned why I should come here, because Israel worked very closely with the apartheid regime and I say to them I have spoken and made peace with the son of the man who slaughtered our people like animals. We went with them and we were able to bring about a peaceful transformation in our country. And I say Israel cooperated with apartheid but they did not get involved in the atrocities of the apartheid regime." SUPER CAPTION: Nelson Mandela, former South African President Mandela said the people of Israel should back Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak in his quest for peace in the Middle East.
