AP Television 11. Wide of the Ministry STORYLINE: A Russian diplomat was killed and four diplomatic employees were kidnapped in the Iraqi capital on Saturday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said. "The situation in Baghdad and in Iraq is very difficult, it is very complicated," said Aleksandt Saltanov, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister. The body of the diplomat was taken to a Baghdad morgue. Saltanov said the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Russian Embassy in Iraq were in contact with the appropriate authorities in order to do everything possible to free the Russians. According to police, witnesses at the scene told them gunmen opened fire on a car that belonged to the Russian Embassy which was travelling through the upmarket Mansour district in west Baghdad. Associated Press Television footage showed a white SUV with tinted windows, diplomatic licence plates and a small tag that had 'Russian Embassy' written on it in English and Arabic. There was no immediate comment from the Iraqi foreign ministry. Russia opposed the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and has no troops there but maintains a diplomatic presence in Iraq. At least 439 foreigners have been kidnapped in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion three years ago, according to figures provided recently by a special U.S. anti-kidnapping task force. Diplomats have previously been the targets of abductions.
