Material: Silk-screened maps, which are laser-cut into continents, countries or states. Each puzzle piece has a specially designed knob for easy removal of that piece. The knob is positioned on the location of the capital of the country or state. The maps represent the continents: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Antarctica & Oceania; and some countries like Canada and the United States of America. Age: 3 1/2 - 6 Presentation: Invite a child Introduce the activity Have the child set up the floor mat Show the child how to carry the map,with one hand on each side, let him know: whenever he needs help he could ask an adult Have the child carry the map and you bring the colored globe to the mat Put the map on the left side Point to the colored globe and Tell the child: do you remember this? This is the same with the map Review the continent and ocean Isolate a continent and ask: can you find this continent on the puzzle map and do the same with the other continents. Also do the same with the ocean Let the child know if we flattened the globe, it would looks like the map Put the globe aside on the top right corner Show him how to work with the map and how to handle the pieces With your pincher grip on the knob, take out one piece of the puzzle and place it on the mat. Take up to three pieces of puzzle map. Place the pieces back one by one, we also can invite the child to put some pieces back Invite him to continue exploring with the puzzle map Put back the color globe Have the child clean up after he finish Note: Once the child can work with this material, introduce the name of the continents and oceans Control maps only for referral, not build on top of the control map because it would be matching game Following exercises: When the child knows the name of the continents, introduce the puzzle map on continent where the child leaves (child’s continent) After he knows his continent, introduce the other continents (maybe the place that significant for him) Also introduce the map of the child’s country Building the puzzle map outside the frame Creating the map of the world in the large of paper (where the child traces the templets and the continent pieces and punching the picture) Control of Error: Within the material, wether or not the inset fit to the frame Language: The name of each continent The names of each country The names of the oceans These are given on three period lessons After the child has sensorial experience Always make a connection that relate with the child. Foe example: if the child just visit Europe, we can introduce europe’s map. Note: Have a political globe in the classroom Have an atlas with information for each country Have a book about the map When you forgets about the names, we always can refer to these globe and atlas, go together with the child so when later he forgets, he also can go to the atlas, globe or book he can looks up Direct Purpose: To learn the names of the continent, countries and oceans To understand the continents, countries and ocean in relation one to another Indirect purpose: Preparation for later study for geography Preparation for writing Age: 3 1/2 - 6
