Versatile composer Anandji Virji Shah ...By Chaitanya Padukone Versatile composer Anandji Virji Shah (of the legendary Bollywood sangeetkaar duo Kalyanji-Anandji) recently turned 80, but is as active and enthusiastic as an 18-year-old! Interestingly, his five children with the help of his family friend dentist recently hosted a grand ‘surprise’ birthday party for him at the NSCI Club, where his London-based eldest daughter (Rita Valambia) also discreetly air-dashed to attend the event. “Being a staunch family-centric person, papa always observes his birthdays every year on a quiet, austere note. But this time it was a triple-dhamaaka celebration, because it was also my mother’s (Shantaben) 75th birthday, as well as their 60th wedding anniversary,” discloses son Dhiren who is an eminent stock-broker. Asked to share the raaz (secret) of his good health, Anandji comes up with, “I eat to live and not vice versa. With no baahar-ka-khaana, even my home-made food intake is limited. Be positive, cheerful, calm and laugh as much as you can. Harmful addictions and vices have no place in my life. Even now, I do get a creative ‘high’ composing on my keyboards and shooting well-composed pictures with my camera,” smiles the articulate Anandji, who like his ‘late’ elder brother Kalyanji, is also known for his sense of philanthropy and witty humour. Asked to comment on his musical journey for the past 60 years, now that Indian cinema is observing its centenary year, voracious reader Anandji who is also hailed as the gyaani human encyclopedia of music has a meaningful impish smile on his face as he opens up. “Originally, I had this plan of becoming an actor-hero, but my short stature proved to be a setback. By divine intervention I was destined to ‘compose’ hundreds of memorable film songs and give big breaks to a large number of upcoming singers, along with my brother-partner-in-rhyme Kalyanji. Way back in the mid-50’s, there were multiple limitations of ‘live’ recordings on the studio sets which used to take place post midnight amidst the eerie silence. From optical tracks to analogs to hi-tech multi-track digital recordings, we have been very instrumental in the fast-forward technological progress of film music,” he says with passion in his voice. What was genius Anandji’s ‘take’ on today’s chartbuster songs, which ironically fade out after a few weeks, in sheer contrast to the ‘evergreen’ haunting melodies of yesteryears? After a brief pause, he offers his analysis.. “That’s because there is a constant overexposure and overdose of the songs on TV, radio, mobile phones, on internet, in shopping malls etc, Which results in music lovers getting fed up after listening to the same songs 24X7.
