End of news briefing, Abe and Yudhoyono shaking hands STORYLINE : Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe signed a bilateral free trade agreement with his Indonesian counterpart, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Monday in Jakarta. The economic partnership agreement will reduce most tariffs on trade between the nations and ensure oil and gas shipments to Japan. "Through the EPA (economic partnership agreement) and Indonesian efforts to improve the domestic investment situation, I am sure that Indonesian and Japanese cooperation will broaden on investment, trade, energy and others in the future," Yudhoyono said following the formal signing of the agreement. Abe's visit also aims to strengthen ties with Indonesia ahead of the 50th anniversary next year of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Talking after the signing ceremony, Abe pledged both countries would work together to play a "significant role" in tackling global climate change. Abe also said Japan was cooperating with Indonesia "to speed up North Korea's denuclearisation". Recently the United Nations atomic watchdog agency and the US government both reported progress in international efforts to end North Korea's nuclear program. Abe also said the two leaders agreed to cooperate "to seek an early resolution to the abduction issue". North Korea admitted in 2002 it kidnapped 13 Japanese in the 1970s and 1980s to train communist spies in Japanese language and culture. It released five of them that year, saying the others had died, but Japan has demanded more evidence of their deaths, and information on additional suspected kidnappings. Pyongyang insists the issue has already been resolved. Abe is on a two-day visit to Indonesia, part of a week-long trip by the Japanese leader that will also take him to India and Malaysia. He and his entourage, which includes a 200-member business mission, are to fly to New Delhi on Tuesday.
