Praise God! The Coming Rejection Con’t. (1-4) Everything Jesus told the apostles was to prepare them for what was coming so they wouldn’t be so shocked. Even though it would all be filed away until well after the events of the next few days- it would be there and accessed especially once the Holy Spirit comes. This is also a fair warning for us- Though we aren’t in the apostles' shoes for this specific situation- being followers of Christ puts us at odds with the world and religion. Even among some professing Christians. The word for Stumble here is more like a set trap- a set up. When least expected. Specifically he mentions the synagogues- so we are specifically talking the Jews and the religious setting traps for them and killing them much like Saul did before his conversion. Historically- this is how it was. Now, we see it from atheists, Islam, political regimes etc. But it is all rooted in evil. This would be an adjustment to have all this hate thrown at them. He didn’t have to let them know about all of this before because He was there and He was the defender and the source… the apostles, while I am sure watched, were not the focus. This would all change. The Work of the Holy Spirit (5-15) He knows His friends are sad- knowing Jesus is going away- going to die… which still hadn’t probably sunk in all the way yet.. .and here He offers them the promise of the Holy Spirit and how the Holy Spirit was in many ways better than having Jesus in His flesh around. The Holy Spirit is with each of them all the time when He arrives. He is in the world. He goes with them everywhere so they are never alone and ALWAYS with God. Jesus understands that their grief prevents them from thinking beyond themselves to His fate. I also think that they cannot fathom asking- they don’t want to know. Their brains are incapable of it. Imagine your loved one telling you that it is to your advantage that they die? LOL Normally it is the other way around- we say- you are better off- no more sickness, with God, no suffering while we are left behind, lost. But here Jesus says- no! You are even MORE blessed with me gone! He could be with every believer all the time after He goes with the Father and returns as the Holy Spirit. We have the Bible because of the Holy Spirit. We have understanding because of the Holy Spirit. We modern Christians have all the great Christian thinkers inspired by the Holy Spirit to help keep us focused when the word would rather us get TikTok famous or TikTok obsessed. Though it would be awesome to know Jesus physically like they did- we have ONLY faith. We have ONLY the Word. Only the Holy Spirit and for me that is MORE Than enough… there is no only about it. Walking by sight vs walking by faith. We are CONVICTED, exposed, revealed, convinced- by the Holy Spirit. Through that conviction we know we can turn to Jesus for help. He will convict others of unbelief. He will be judgement. “The basic sin is the sin which puts self at the centre of things and consequently refuses to believe in Him.” (Morris) Conversely, when we see our shame and surrender and repent, the Holy Spirit is our defender. - “A sinner is a sacred thing: the Holy Ghost hath made him so. Your sham sinner is a horrid creature; but a man truly convinced of sin by the Spirit of God is a being to be sought after as a jewel that will adorn the crown of the Redeemer.” (Spurgeon) Sin is the truth about man, righteousness is the truth about God, judgment is the inevitable combination of these two truths.- Guzik “It is expedient for you, implies that the dispensation of the Spirit is a more blessed manifestation of God than was even the bodily presence of the risen Saviour.” (Alford) “The withdrawal of the bodily presence of Christ was the essential condition of His universal spiritual presence.” (Dods) “Each man’s conscience has some glimmering of light on each of these; some consciousness of guilt, some sense of right, some power of judgment of what is transitory and worthless; but all these are unreal and unpractical, till the convicting work of the Spirit has wrought in him.” (Alford) Even the worst of us understand the righteousness of Jesus. This is the work of the Holy Spirit- and that righteousness brings us closer to Him or it repels us when we wilfully choose to be evil. He brings judgement, ultimately, to the ruler of this world. The Holy Spirit will guide them and bring truth- Also, words from Jesus that they apostles can’t handle to hear right now. So, the words will come later, from God thru the Holy Spirit. And all of it will be the to His glory. The New Testament! #DailyBibleVerse #BibleReading #GospelReading
