Outgoing Busiro East legislator Medard Lubega Sseggona has thrown down a political gauntlet to National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, urging him to either step out of hiding and confront President Museveni’s entrenched political machinery head-on or flee the country altogether. According to Sseggona, the opposition is drifting dangerously without a clear command center, as its most visible leader remains conspicuously absent from the public arena. Bobi Wine’s disappearance followed a dramatic and narrowly survived raid on his home in the aftermath of the elections. His residence remains under heavy military siege and constant surveillance, even as police insist they are not pursuing him—a claim that has done little to calm public suspicion. However, as these questions dominate public discourse, a more troubling issue risks being sidelined. By fixating on whether Bobi Wine should resurface or flee into exile, are we not diverting attention from a regime so deeply entrenched in lawlessness that his fundamental rights are allegedly being violated? Instead of placing the burden on the victim, perhaps the national conversation should shift toward applying sustained pressure on the regime responsible for creating such a hostile and repressive political environment.
