Balvaird Castle, situated in Perthshire, Scotland, is a well-preserved example of a late medieval Scottish tower house. Constructed in the late 15th century, likely around 1495, it was built for Sir Andrew Murray following his marriage to Margaret Barclay, heiress to the baronies of Arngask and Kippo, which included the Balvaird estate . The castle showcases refined architectural details uncommon in similar structures of its time, such as carved stone corbels, a finely crafted wall cupboard in the first-floor hall, and a cap-house above the stair tower . In 1567, significant additions were made, including a gatehouse, courtyard, and walled gardens, enhancing both its defensive capabilities and domestic comfort . The Murray family resided at Balvaird until 1658, when they relocated to Scone Palace after ascending in nobility . Subsequently, the castle saw varied use, including occupation by farmers, before being abandoned in the 19th century. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Consider Supporting us on: 📌 Youtube Memberships: / @pinnedonplaces 📌 Discord: / discord 📌 Instagram: / pinnedonplaces 📌 Website: https://www.pinnedonplaces.com 📌 Patreon: / pinnedonplaces Music Credits: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 📌 Epidemic Sound 📌 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hope you join us next time on our adventures.
