The term 'SARS-CoV-2 placentitis' was introduced to refer to the triad of findings of chronic histiocytic intervillositis, perivillous fibrin deposition which typically reached the level of massive perivillous fibrin deposition, and villous trophoblast necrosis occurring in a placenta delivered from a pregnant patient with COVID-19 infection. Because the placenta is designed to maximize the transfer of gases (oxygen) and nutrients between the patient and fetus, when the system fails a wide range of maternal and fetal complications can develop. Depending on the etiology, duration, and intensity of these pathologic process(es), significant maternal or fetal vascular malperfusion can ensue, which can result in placental insufficiency, fetal hypoxia (lack of oxygen) and stillbirth. There has not been a viral infection of humans ever reported that consistently and characteristically produces placental insufficiency to the extent of causing intrauterine fetal demise or perinatal death until SARS-CoV-2. *********************************** Check out these resources: 1. https://www.babiesafter35.com/article... *********************************** Welcome to my channel and be sure to hit “subscribe”!
