The nuclear warning sirens in HM Naval Base Portsmouth were tested for one minute as part of their routine testing. More information on these sirens (and to see them close up) can be found on this video • Air Raid Sirens : Carter & Castle Castings... and within its description. If you turn up the volume towards the end, it has the long wind down once the sirens are switched off. Filmed in front of HMS Warrior (next to HMNB Portsmouth and the Historic Dockyard) on a rainy June day (sometimes it is sunny in Portsmouth -- honest!). Two days before this, a large scale 7 hour drill simulating an explosion unleashing radioactive materials on an 'inner city street' was held within the naval base. The event, named Exercise Cameron, involved around 400 people. The naval base was gratefully used by the emergency services as parts of the base are like old city streets and so more closely mirrored an attack occurring within a narrow city road with terraced housing, as opposed to having to mock an attack within a disused car park or large field. In the past, if the dockyard was performing a large scale exercise simulating a radioactive release, the sirens have been sounded (for quite a long time). But as it was designed to be in any street, the sirens were not used and so sounded for their routine test two days later. The ≥4 Castle Castings Cold War era (air raid) sirens within the base are usually tested 3 times a year and are kept in case a visiting nuclear powered vessel should leak radiation. I've also tacked a bit of a video showing a Castle Castings siren's rotor coming to a stop to the end.
