South Carolina is a winter home to the iconic American woodcock, and as the migration moves south, local dogs and hunters follow. This place is unique in its own way, from a love of clapper rail to the pursuit of redfish. These game species warrant a strong ethical respect, and as hunters, we must hold ourselves to higher standards. β"Of course, like every hunter, when you first start, you want to kill your first one. You want to kill a bunch of them. You know, you need your limit every time you go to prove yourself and your worthiness. And I started realizing that if I just back off of this a little bit, I don't need that many birds to eat. So we started backing off how many we would harvest over the course of a year. And you can find them over and over again with the dog. And you get all the thrill and all the rush, all the excitement and you let them fly. I really do love the bird. They deserve such respect for what they do to fly the distance they fly, and the amount of time that they fly them, to find these covers, to eat what they eat, to be so specific to certain types of requirements. And be able to find that across the whole eastern seaboard, it's pretty spectacular. And, uh, and that warrants some respect. You know, you gotta earn them. I think you should put in some equal effort to harvest one." π Timestamps: 00:38 A love for South Carolina 01:26 Clapper rail hunting 01:42 First clapper rail on the wing 01:54 Brittany retrieve to hand 02:15 Panned out clapper rail set 02:49 Another clapper rail on the wing 03:15 Redfish on the fly 03:28 Redfish hook up 03:56 How many years have you been woodcock hunting? 04:45 Story from youth about wild bobwhite quail 05:37 Woodcock hunting 06:19 Dog on point with woodcock set 06:28 Woodcock retrieve 06:36 Reflecting on a hunters journey and letting the birds fly 08:29 "you don't need the tailgate photos... tone down your internet presence" 09:32 Speckled trout on spin reels 10:10 Building a community This is a Project Upland Magazine Original Production: projectupland.com
