Empedocles – Autobiography of a Demon

Presentation by Victoria Wohl (University of Toronto Department of Classics), a 6-month JHI Faculty Research Fellow in 2019-20. Part of our JHI Alumni Research Lecture Series. For the early Greek philosopher Empedocles (c. 490-430 BCE), all things in the cosmos are a temporary combination of the four elements – earth, water, fire, and air – brought together under the force of Love and soon to be dispersed under Strife. In his physical theory, everything is equally material and equally alive. This video explores the consequences of this vital materialism for Empedocles’ view of the self (autos), life (bios), and writing (graphē) and the relation among them. It proposes that Empedocles’ innovative poetic style not only represents but enacts his theory of the radical implication of the self within the meshwork of life.
