In 2017, the Catskill Thunder Gondola was installed to provide the first ever base to summit lift at Belleayre, first detachable lift out of the Discovery Lodge base, and better connect the lower and upper mountains. While a high speed quad was originally planned for this location, it was decided to install a gondola to match the level of service at the two other resorts operated by the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority, which both have gondolas. The lift also runs select days in the summer, and a gondola is easier to load for non-skiers. When Governor Andrew Cuomo first announced the project, there was considerable backlash when it really should've just been good news. New York State taxpayers came up with derogatory nicknames like "Gondola to Nowhere", "The Stupidest Lift Ever Built in the World", and several others. An anti-gondola petition even surfaced. Despite the backlash, ORDA continued with the project, selecting Doppelmayr USA to build the lift, opening it to the public on December 30th, 2017. The lift is 6391 feet long by 1339 vertical feet. It outseated Hunter Mountain's Kaatskill Flyer for the longest lift in The Catskills, though it does not serve the highest vertical. With 60 CWA Omega IV cabins, hourly capacity is 2000 at a top speed of 1000 feet per minute, though it was running slower, at 840 feet per minute during this recording. In addition to the gondola, a new connector trail was added between the bottom of Tomahawk and the Discovery Lodge, allowing one to take laps on the gondola. The once highly controversial lift has more than proven itself, increasing skier visits by a significant amount, and allowing for longer, top to bottom runs with a quick comfortable ride back to the top. The gondola is so popular that the Tomahawk Quad now only operates on weekends and both sides of Lift 1/2 are rarely needed. Recorded on December 20th, 2018
