Recorded by Elvis at RCA's Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee on 4 June 1970, "The Sound of Your Cry" has the distinction of being one of a handful of tracks recorded by Elvis in the 1970's never to appear on a regular Elvis album within his lifetime. Although released as a single in August 1971, the song would not appear on an album until October 1981 when it was released on "The Greatest Hits - Volume One", but even in this case it was an extended version of the song which was released. This album however, was not released in the UK, instead an album with a strikingly similar tracklisting and album art was released at the same time, but used "The Sound of Your Cry" as the title track. This was done so as to co-ordinate the album with the release of the song as a single and a recent release of "It's Only Love" as a single, a version of which was also contained on the album. The original RCA master itself would not appear on an album for a further fourteen years, before it's release on disc 1 of "The 70's Masters" set in 1995. The RCA master lasted for three minutes and fifteen seconds, whilst the extended version released in 1981 lasted for four minutes and two seconds but the full length master which contains a further thirty seconds, has never been released officially. Only the fourth song recorded by Elvis during his legendary "Nashville Marathon", Elvis attempted eleven takes with the final take being chosen as the master. However, it was not until 2020 and the release of “From Elvis in Nashville” that the original undubbed unedited master finally received an official release, but the edited undubbed master has appeared on a couple of bootleg releases in recent years. As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!
