On Saturday, the Trump administration, along with Israel, launched an unprovoked, illegal war on Iran. Immediately, people hit the streets to express the majority sentiment in this country: we reject another endless war for regime change! More than 100 protesters continued this anti-war outpouring today at Providence City Hall as part of a coordinated day of action. These strikes follow the largest U.S. military buildup in the Middle East since 2003, when the Bush administration launched its invasion of Iraq. The Pentagon has 50,000 soldiers across the Middle East and has deployed a massive amount of advanced weapons to target Iran, including two aircraft carriers. This conflict has the potential to quickly expand into a devastating regional war, which will bring unthinkable death and destruction. Already, other countries in the region have been drawn into the war. Trump’s claims that Iran poses a threat to the United States are false. And he has made it clear that he is willing to sacrifice the lives of U.S. servicemembers in this regime change war, along with an unlimited number of Iranians and others in the region. Monday’s protest is part of a nationwide day of emergency action. According to Sajo Jefferson, an organizer with the Party for Socialism and Liberation, “This is a new chapter in 75 years of U.S. meddling in Iran. We all know that this entire time, the U.S. elite have wanted Iran’s oil. So we must tell the truth that this is a regime-change war, designed to reassert the U.S. ruling class’s grip over a sovereign nation. And once again, it is ordinary people, regular folks like you and me — in Iran, in Palestine, across the region, and right here at home — who are expected to suffer, to grieve, and to pay the price for this rich man’s war.” National co-sponsors of this day of protest include: ANSWER Coalition, The People’s Forum, National Iranian-American Council, Democratic Socialists of America, Palestinian Youth Movement, American Muslims for Palestine, Black Alliance for Peace, CODEPINK, Center on Conscience and War, About Face. Local sponsors include Cranston Forward, Indivisible Metro Chapter, the Party for Socialism and Liberation, the RI Anti-War Committee, Refugee Dream Center, Jewish Voices for Peace, Democratic Socialists of America Rhode Island, and Brown Divest Coalition.
